Small House

Creekside Cabin

Although beautifully situated among firs and redwoods, the layout of this 1920’s shingle-style weekend cabin precluded views to the nearby seasonal creek. The architect designed a new double-height living room addition to wrap the original exterior. Weathered shingles and period windows remain – when open, kitchen and living room are connected. New materials contrast with the old; reclaimed beams mediate between them, and visually echo the surrounding woods. Window walls showcase views to the swirling waters below.

    Beautiful but stupid.

One terrific storm, some kind of foul-up in the way the floodwaters are suppose to flow, and that stream will rise right into that beautiful building.

I’ve seen exactly that here in the Catskills.

Then it will no longer be Creekside Cabin but Creekcurrent Cabin.

For those arguing about the size of the home, it is considered a cabin, as it says in the title. Silly people. It might not be considered small to some people but it is certainly a small home. Clearly they went out of their way to make clever use of the compact space for example the drawers under the staircase. Regardless of the size, I think it’s absolutely perfect.

Did any body notice that the last picture was a before pic of the original cabin and the first picture was after the remodel.
I have to agree that the house is very picturesque. and I especially like the living room. But I can think of many places that that house would fit in perfectly so it isn’t like building something similar would be impossible to capture that feel. No body would want to have exactly the same house that everyone else had anyway it wouldn’t be special if every one had the same thing. I love the warmth and openness it is not easy to capture that feeling especially in a small space. It makes me want to build something again 🙂
